Creativity and Self Expression

Being able to express yourself creatively is something that I feel is incredibly important.

It is a physical outward manifestation of what is going on inside of us, a way of expressing emotion so that it does not just sit inside of us.

Supressing any emotion, happiness, sadness etc and locking those inside can lead to problems with physical & mental health.

So, what I would like to ask you to do, is to take a few moments and think about how you can be creative and express yourself creatively. There is no right or wrong answer as to how to express your creativity, it is a very individual thing. It might be that you like to sing, to dance, to play a musical instrument, to bake, to paint or draw. Maybe your particular method is to write, or carve wood, make a model, or gardening. It really isn’t important what the method is, as long as it works for you.

Some people will say that they are not creative, and while it may be true that some people find it harder to express their creativity, I believe that it is probably the case that they haven’t yet found the right way of expressing their creativity.

My own preference is to use music. I do not claim to be a brilliant musician, in fact I will tell you the exact opposite. Yes, I can play a guitar, drums, djembe, native American style flute. Do I think I am very good at any of them? No. Does that actually matter? No. If whatever way you express your creativity works for you, and you enjoy it, it doesn’t matter if you can’t play guitar like Jon Gomm. Just enjoy it!

I have put a video of me playing a djembe onto the Garden of Awen YouTube channel. I can hear some mistakes in it, but I still enjoyed being present in that moment and just expressing that through the drum, and for me that was what was most important.

So please take a bit of time and if you are unsure what is the right way for you, just try something and see what you enjoy and what works for you.
